Planning/ development took three years and production took another four years, so it was seven years in total. It is also a story about the friendship between JP and his long-time friend, Frisbee. It’s a love story between the main character, JP and the heroine, Sonoshee. Redline is a film about the distant future, a race of the fastest analogue machine in space. Please tell us about the plot of the film for those who are unaware, and how long it took you to make it, from start to finish. Your film, Redline, is one of the movies at the upcoming Reel Anime Festivals around Australia. I know that Kawajiri-san has been a huge influence on you, but who else has inspired you throughout the years? Anime used to be considered only for children, however it now appeals to persons of all ages due to its depth which I see as a positive. ![]() I feel confident (of its global growth) due to recent media exposure of anime. I would not have expected Japanese anime to become so popular 15 years ago. Other than Japan, are there any other countries that you think are producing a similar style of animation?ĭid you ever expect the anime scene to become so popular worldwide, and how do you feel about its global growth? ![]() What makes it unique is the history of Japanese anime which is over 50 years old, the anime studios, and the way directors infuse their personalities into the films. Japanese anime is everything from anime playing in the theatre to anime made for television anime. In your opinion, what makes Japanese anime so unique? Japanese anime has always been viewed, at least in the West, as quite different from the animation we are used to from our own countries. When I think about it, I have been in the industry for 25 years, but I still have more ideas to develop. What got you into the career, and did you ever think you’d make it to where you are now?Īs a child, I was inspired when I saw GINGA TETSUDO 999 (GALAXY EXPRESS 999) at the movie theatre. The film has achieved God-level status on college campuses and in psychedelic circles. To me, it’s right up there with Akira as an animated achievement. Redlineĭirected by Koike, Redline is an epic anime movie that took seven years to animate. The stylized sex and violence are balanced with rich atmosphere and emotion. These short films are best described as neo-grindhouse where the adventures take place in a hyper- reality full of exaggerated characters. There are three Lupin the IIIrd OVA’s released so far: Daisuke Jigen’s Gravestone, Goemon Ishikawa’s Blood Spray, and The Lie Of Fujiko Mine. So it was only natural that he would return Lupin the IIIrd to its more mature manga origins in a series of OVA’s. Koike has directed more Lupin the IIIrd theatrical movies than any other director. Emotional and action-packed, The Boy and the Beast can’t be missed. The story is about a lost boy who gets raised in a world of beast-people. Takeshi Koike served as a key animator on the movie. The Boy and the Beast is my favorite film by Mamoru Hosoda. The heavy shadows and dynamic character animation is a signature of Koike’s style. Koike animated the iconic opening to Samurai Champloo. The esthetics and techniques influenced the animation industry so that you can see Dead Leaves’ fingerprint on everything from the anime of Studio Trigger to Rise of The TMNT. Dead Leaves is a visual cocaine-binge of snappy animation. Koike served as a key animator on Dead Leaves, a subversive anime movie that’s become a cult classic in animation circles. This high-contrast look would become a staple of Koike’s work. Koike’s use of heavy blacks are influenced by his favorite comic artists, Frank Miller and Mike Mignola. World Record is an animated short directed by Koike in the Animatrix anthology. Whether it’s a quiet meditative scene of D riding his horse through the wasteland or a vicious vampire battle, the animation delivers on all points. The film is a macabre feast for the senses. The post-apocalyptic vampire western was the principle inspiration for Castlevania. Koike was also a key animator on Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. ![]()
